Weobley Castle

Castell Weble

Which definitions does it satisfy?

This dataset does not record whether something “is a castle”. It records a verdict against each named definition, with the reasoning that produced it.

DefinitionVerdictBasis
Fortified residence yes An east curtain wall, two southern towers, a stairs turret rising to a lookout and an entrance gatehouse provide active defence, while the hall, solar, chambers with large fireplaces and lordly ownership by the de la Bere family (from c.1304) satisfy the private-residence half; Cadw cites national importance for medieval defensive practices.

Notes

Upgraded to an assessed record from Cadw's full report (GM010). fortified_residence assessed 'yes' on both halves. The later comfort improvements by Sir Rhys ap Thomas (a two-storey porch, a first-floor chapel) were weighed for palatial_seat but left unassessed — the report shows amenity added, not defences removed, and no palatial rebuild. popular_castle left unassessed (no usage evidence in the report).
